Wall Sculpture Decor
Adding Artwork into the Home
Home decor is all about creating a relaxing space for you to enjoy downtime, entertain, and share memories. From comfortable couches, to antique pieces that tell a story, the things you use to decorate your house are what turn your house into your home. While these pieces are good ways to personalize the home, there is nothing better than artwork to tell the story of the family that lives in the home. Artwork is the personal touch that provides examples of special memories, a love a place or concept, or simply a profound appreciation for beautiful things and creative spirit. For many, artwork is meant to inspire creativity in oneself and give a general sense of happiness and comfort. That being said, there is no better place to house artwork than in the home. It is where we spend lots of time, it's the space we share with others, and it is where we house many wonderful memories. Bring artwork into your home and you will not only liven up the decor of your space, but you will be inspired daily, reminded to appreciate the beauty in things, and will get an even stronger sense of comfort in your home than ever before. |
Why Wall Sculpture?
The walls in a home are great spaces to showcase works of art. A clean, white wall like the one above, on a staircase, or in a foyer, wall space without artwork can look empty regardless of the surrounding decorating scheme. While most people see an empty wall and will think, "painting," Matt has been branching out to explore creating wall sculptures. Matt's sculptural basketry has evolved significantly in the past few years. From functional purpose being the focus, to weaving baskets with the intention of sculptural art, the wall hangings have been a newer way to view his baskets in a new context. These pieces are often collections of woven kudzu baskets and incorporate other foliage and copper. For the structure of these wall sculptures, he uses mountain laurel branches or contorted filbert found in the woods. Both materials offer a range of possibilities for wall sculptures as they both sprawl and branch, offering great places for baskets to nest. Matt's pieces reach out off the wall and introduce intricate and unique textures and patterns to any home decor. Built for the wall, often on commission as to get the perfect size, shape, and colors, these wall sculptures are great additions to any space. |
Examples of Matt's Wall Sculpture Work for Home Decor:
The following pieces are some of the larger sized wall sculptures created by Matt. Within the realm of wall sculpture decor, Matt has found ways to branch out to create very different styles of work. From the more rustic style with dark woody colors and copper leaf ornaments to the scorched, clay covered basket collections, his pieces can be good fits for the decor of all different types of homes.
Matt also does a number of smaller wall sculptures that are prefect for spaces with less room for one of his larger sculptural wall hangings. The smaller wall hangings are also a chance for Matt to experiment more with textures and color mixing before making large wall hanging sculptures using new techniques.
Incorporating Wall Sculptures into Your Decor
With the walls in the home being wonderful spaces to for works of art, adding a wall sculpture can be far more dynamic and interesting than any painting you could find. A wall sculpture offers the texture and depth in a way that a two dimensional piece of art cannot. The three dimensionality of a wall sculpture creates not only the immediate depth with the branching out and nesting baskets, but it creates another wonderful element: shadows.
Any art should be well lit so it can be appreciated to its full potential. With wall sculptures, especially with Matt's sculptural basket sculptures, shadows created by light and negative spaces in the piece will create an even larger impact on the decor of the room. A well lit sculpture will expand the impact of a piece far beyond the piece itself. Shadows will shift as the day progresses and move as the light in the room changes.
Utilizing wall sculpture decor in the home is not always the easiest thing to do as sculptures can be harder to imagine in a home or fitting into an existing design scheme. That being said, the three dimensionality of a wall sculpture, paired with good lighting, will be the perfect addition to any room. Completely personalized through working on commission, Matt is happy to talk with anyone interested in finding or creating just the right piece for their home.
